Within days of the initial reporting of the virus, researchers completely sequenced the genome of several viral isolates and posted the sequences on the internet. The collaborative nature of the global response to the outbreak has been remarkable. Less than a month later (as of July 1, 2009), the WHO confirmed over 77,000 cases with 332 deaths. At this time there were 30,000 confirmed cases in 74 countries.
The virus disseminated globally with sufficient celerity that on Jthe World Health Organization (WHO) raised the Flu Pandemic Alert Level to Phase 6, officially designating a new global pandemic. A new human influenza A virus (IAV) strain of swine-like origin emerged in Mexico and the United States in March and April of 2009.
